Preventive Cardiology
India has the dubious distinction of being the world's heart disease and diabetes capital. Heart disease is the leading cause of death, and what's worse, it strikes Indians in their prime years. Heart disease can be a life-changing event, and many patients never fully recover and become 'cardiac cripples.' It begins with a lack of mental confidence, which leads to a decrease in physical capability, which further reduces confidence, and the vicious cycle continues. The good news is that heart disease is largely avoidable. If appropriate lifestyle and medication changes are implemented early enough, those at risk may never need to undergo a cardiac interventional procedure such as heart surgery (bypass).
Radiology
The department is outfitted with the most recent 64 slice GE Light Speed CT scanner, which can perform a CT coronary angiography in under a minute.
Procedures completed:
- Whole-body computed tomography
- CT of the head and neck
- Angiographies of the entire body
- Cardiac CT – CT coronary angiographies, RIMA LIMA evaluation, post-stent and post-CABG evaluation, CT aortogram for aortic aneurysm.
- CT-guided procedures and biopsy
Children's Heart Centre
The Asian Heart Institute's Children Heart Centre is ISO 9001-2000 certified and designed exclusively for children. It incorporates cutting-edge medical technology and infrastructure in a completely child-friendly environment.
The Children's Heart Centre was designed with children's safety and comfort in mind. Everything has been planned to optimise a child's care in a very special way, from the decor in the clinics, the examination couch, the soft linen for wrapping babies, the stringent infection control measures, to around-the-clock physician care.
Angiography/Angioplasty
Cardiologists perform the angiography procedure. It is carried out in a catheterization laboratory. The procedure is performed by inserting a catheter through the groyne or wrist and passing it through the artery up to the heart. The catheter is used to cannulate the arteries that supply blood and oxygen to the heart (coronary artery). A radiographic contrast solution is injected through the catheter, which then flows into the coronary artery with the blood. Fluoroscopy machines capture images as the contrast flows down the artery ( a form of x-ray). The image shows if there is any stenosis (obstruction) in the coronary artery. The patient is usually awake during the procedure, which is performed under local anaesthesia.
